Theme Day: Funny Signs

This is “Achutín” (meaning something like Sneezy), which is the character created in the media campaign to remember people to prevent air infections, like last year's A1H1.

This sign is at the entrance of a museum and says: “Viruses non admitted”  followed by some important sanitary recommendations such as wash hands, cover when sneezing, and others.


Este es “Achutín” el personaje creado para la campaña contra las infecciones como la influenza A1H1 del año pasado.

El anuncio está en la entrada de un museo, recordándole a la gente las medidas básicas de prevención para este tipo de enfermedades.

Red Hot Science

This is the entrance to the Museo Horno 3 (The Steel Museum, previously posted here) .

The motto that is below the name translates to “Red Hot Science and Technology”.

Inside the museum there is a simulation of how this structure functioned when it was in use, melting the minerals to produce steel.


Esta es la entrada al Museo Horno 3 (aquí hay más fotos).

La frase del Museo es “Ciencia y Tecnología al Rojo Vivo”

Dentro del museo hay una simulación de cómo funcionaba el horno cuando era parte de la Fundidora, y explica el proceso de aleación de los minerales para producir el acero.

Follow the Yellow Road

Just as Dorothy was told on the Wizar of Oz, you'll also need to follow the yellow path to go upstairs at the Steel Museum in Fundidora Park.

The Spiral

This is an sculpture named "Spiral".

It's very simple in design  but has the added feature that it makes a sound that can be heard when people walk by it. Its made by some speakers built into its base.


Esta escultura se llama "Espìral".

Tiene un diseño muy sencillo, pero tiene un sonido que se puede escuchar sólo cuando se camina dentro de ella. El sonido viene de unas bocinas en su base.

Steel Gallery

This was my runner up for August's Theme Day.

Its right at the entrace to the exhibit in the Steel Museum called Museo Horno 3 (Museum Furnance 3) at Fundidora Park, quite a long name isn't it?

A Steel worker carring the name of the exhibit that can be translated to something like “Steel Maker”. Here you can learn the whole process that takes place to produce steel, from the mines to take the iron ore to the possible products that are derived from steel, sans Superman or the NFL team though.


Esta era mi otra opción para el Tema del Día de Agosto.

Está justo en la entrada a la exhibición en el Museo del Acero, llamado Museo Horno 3 en el Parque Fundidora.

Es un trabajador de la Acerera cargando el nombre de la exhibición “Acería”. En ella pueden aprender como es el proceso completo para producir el acero, desde que se obtienen los materiales en las minas hasta  los diferentes productos derivados de este metal, aunque con las notables excepciones de Superman y el equipo de la NFL.

Theme Day: Metal

This month's theme is Metal, this is a picture from a family at the Steel Museum in Fundidora Park, called Horno 3 (Furnace 3).

Why a family between chains? Well, I tried to show one of the Mexican values that are still recognized in Monterrey's society: the family union, and what better way that represent this that with the strong links of a chain.

You can watch some other pictures from Fundidora Park, that once hosted one of the biggest foundries in Latin America.

El tema del mes es Metal, esta foto es de una familia en el Museo del Acero en el Parque Fundidora, llamado Horno 3.

¿Porqué una familia entre cadenas? Bueno, lo que traté de mostrar es uno de los valores Mexicanos que aún se reconocen en la sociedad Regiomontana: la unión familiar, y que mejor manera de representarlo que con la fuerte unión de los eslabones en una cadena.

Pueden ver algunas otras fotos del Parque Fundidora, que alguna vez fue sede de una de las empresas de fundiciones de América Latina.

Train Crossing

An old Train Crossing (Actually says: “Careful with the Train”) sign and train wheels, taken at the Museo Horno 3 which is a Steel Museum. 

Seemed just right to make it an old time look.

Art Imitates Life

This is an sculpture made to the image of the main peaks of the Cerro de la Silla (Saddle Hill) which is on the background.

Esta es una escultura de los picos más conocidos del Cerro de la Silla, que está al fondo.

Get Inside

This is part of Fundidora Park. 

As I told you before, this used to be a Steel Foundry that closed in the 80s and was converted into a Park for the City.

You can see this sculture, which is supposed to be “doors” or a tunnel inside the park. Also on the right side you can see the hotel (Holiday Inn) located inside the park, just by the racing track.

Esto es parte del Parque Fundidora. 

Como les mencioné antes, esto era una Fundidora de Acero que cerró en los 80s y fue convertida en un parque para la Ciudad.

Pueden ver esta escultura, que se supone que son puertas o un túnel dentro del parque. También del lado derecho pueden ver el hotel (Holiday Inn) que está dentro del parque, justo a un lado de la pista de carreras.

Botero's Abu Ghraib

Haven't had the chance to post this before. Almost a month ago Botero's Abu Ghraib exhibition left the City to return to Berkeley, California. Fernando Botero is a master Colombian painter, known for painting, or sculpting, his subjects as fat people/animals.

It's certainly a crude and chilling expo because of the theme: the tortures at Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison. That's why I rather take a picture of the title instead of any painting.

Botero's main goal with this exhibition was to do for Abu Ghraib what Picasso did for Guernica.

No había tenido la oportunidad de publicar esto antes. Hace casi un mes, la exhibición Abu Ghraib de Botero dejó la Ciudad para regresar a Berkeley, California. Fernando Botero es un maestro pintor y escultor colombiano, que es conocido por sus sujetos “gordos”.

Realmente es una exposición con un tema crudo y escalofriante: las torturas en la prisión Iraquí de Abu Ghraib. Por eso preferí tomarle una foto al título en lugar de alguna de las pinturas.

El principal objetivo de Botero con esta exhibición era hacer para Abu Ghraib lo que Picasso hizo por Guernica.

Going with the Flow

This is a man made river that goes thru Monterrey's Downtown seen from one of the bridges that cross it.

It was an old project that had been postponed several years, but it was done to give the City another touristic attraction for the Forum 2007, a kind of “Cultural Olympics” which the City hosted last year. 

Smooth ride, great way to relax and see the Old Town... and also Fundidora Park which is where it ends.

Este es un río artificial  que va por el Centro de Monterrey, visto desde uno de los puentes que lo cruzan.

Es un proyecto antiguo que había sido pospuesto por muchos años, pero se retomó para darle a la Ciudad otra atracción turística para el Fórum 2007, que es un tipo de “Olimpiada Cultural” del que la Ciudad fue sede el año pasado.

Un paseo tranquilo, una muy buena opción para relajarse y conocer el Barrio Antiguo... y también el Parque Fundidora que es donde termina.

Life on the Fast Lane

This is a girl and her mother are on a professional racing track on Fundidora Park. 

Originally Fundidora Park was a Steel Foundry, but some 20-25 years ago was asked to rellocate for the high levels of pollution produced. It was far to expensive to move all the machinery and they decided to close. 

The City converted the Foundry into a public park and left a few of the structures of the plant, as you can see a pipes on the background. There are also other  buildings to host sporting and cultural events. 

Then a racing track was built to host a race by the CART series. The track is used year round to walk, bicycle or skate.

La niña y su mamá pasean en una pista de carreras profesional en el Parque Fundidora.

Originalmente el Parque Fundidora era una Fundidora de Acero, pero hace 20-25 años se les pidió la reubicaran debido a los altos niveles de contaminación que producía. Consideraron muy caro mover la maquinaria y decidieron cerrar.

La Ciudad convirtió la antigua Fundidora en un parque público y dejó algunas de las estructuras de la planta, como los tubos que se ven atrás. También tiene instalaciones para eventos deportivos y culturales.

Después una pista de carreras fue construida para la CART. La pista se utiliza todo el año para caminar, andar en bicicleta o patinar.

“I want to be Bob Dylan...”

Or so the Counting Crows sing in Mr. Jones. 

Bob Dylan gave a concert here last Friday. In all honesty I like Mr. Jones more than any of Dylan's songs but, although not a big fan, I know that he's one of music greatest legends. 

The reviews in newspapers and radio stations say that it was a great show, altough he didn't interact much with the audience. 

The building in the photo is the Arena Monterrey, which is where the event was held.

O al menos así dicen los Counting Crows en Mr. Jones.

Bob Dylan dió un concierto aquí el viernes pasado. Honestamente me gusta más Mr. Jones que cualquiera de las canciones de Dylan aunque sé que es una de las leyendas de la música.

En el radio y en los periódicos dicen que estuvo muy bueno el concierto aunque no interactuó mucho con el público.

El edificio en la foto es la Arena Monterrey, que es donde fué el evento.
