Iron Sculptures - Esculturas de Fierro

A few more works of art from Banamex's sale for the benefit of the Red Cross (for more information, please check this post)

These are made from scrap iron, which is a way to recycle while having a nice decor at your home. Here is a smiling sun, the Cross and the last supper (at the bottom), which also fits with yesterday's post.

The author is Mario Pacheco Lazcano.

Sewn into it - A hilo y aguja

This is another of the “paintings” that are part of the sale for the benefit of the Red Cross (for more details, please check this post)

The special part of this work of art is that it has not even a drop of paint, it is all made of fabric and thread; yes, just like you read it, it is all sewn to form the scene, which is made by Guillermina Mendoza.

Mexican Red Cross is an institution that provides emergency medical and humanitarian help to thousands of persons per year. Their only income stream is from the donations of the people.

Banamex (oldest bank in Mexico, now part of Citibank) along with a lot of artists and artisans, are  organizing their annual art sale with revenue going to the Red Cross.

Today is the first post of many showcasing the paintings and sculptures that are up to sale. If you are interested in something or see something that catches your eye, we can ask for more details about price and/or shipping. Also, there is the option of donating thru Monterrey's Red Cross website, where all details are outlined. The link provides the translated website.

There is no small donation, any help will be appreciated and will be put into good use.

Day of the Dead or All Saints Day 1.3

Here's another art expression of death.

The theme is a marriage (groom and bride) and love.

Notice how colorful is the image, which is another distinctive trait of this celebration: bright colors and taking flowers, candy, food and liquor to relatives' graves.

This is not meant to be scarry at all, it's meant to remind everyone to take death a little bit lighter (at least for a day) and that, at the end, is part of life.

Aquí hay otra expresión del arte del Día de Muertos.

El tema es el matrimonio (marido y mujer) y el amor.

Fíjense lo colorida de la imagen, que es otra característica de esta celebración: colores brillantes, y llevar flores, dulces, comida y licor a las tumbas de los parientes.

Esto no es hecho para asustar a nadie, más bien es para recordarle a todos que deben de tomar la muerte de forma más ligera (al menos por un día) y que, al final, es parte de la vida.

Seeds of Life

This sculpture is called “Seeds of Life”. The two brown objects are supposed to be seeds lying over a fountain that nurtures them.

It is located at the base of two of the highest buildings in the City, as if implying that both grew from similar seeds. Here is a previous post featuring those buildings.


Esta escultura se llama “Semillas de la Vida”. Los dos objetos cafés son semillas sobre una fuente que las alimenta.

Está ubicada en la base de dos de los edificios más altos de la Ciudad, como diciendo que ambos hubieran surgido de semillas similares. Aquí pueden ver una entrada anterior con ambos edificios.

Angels to the Sky

The past few days I've been posting some  unexplained photos, finally here is the answer.

What I've shown you has been part of this promotion made by the Museum of Comtemporary Art (called Marco) where they got this art pieces representing angels.

Some replicas were placed across one of the newest buildings at Tech of Monterrey (also knowm as ITESM).  Some were left at a small grassed hill and these were installed at the main building, all the way from the first floor to the top.

You can see the yellow logo from Marco and the explanation in the pink section of the sign.



Los últimos días he estado poniendo algunas fotos sin explicación, finalmente aquí está la respuesta.

Lo que les he mostrado ha sido parte de una promoción hecha por el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo (Marco) donde tienen unas obras de arte representando ángeles.

Algunas replicas fueron puestas a lo largo de uno de los edificios más nuevos en el Tec de Monterrey (o ITESM). Algunos fueron dejados en el pasto de una pequeña loma y estos fueron instalados en el edificio principal, desde el primer hasta el último piso.

Pueden ver el logo amarillo de Marco y la explicación de la exhibición en la parte rosa del anuncio.

This is a sculpture located at Rio Santa Catarina. It's called "Las Nubes", spanish for The Clouds.

100th Post

So this is the 100th post, thanks to all of you that have taken some time to visit.

This photo is from the inside of the Mayor's Office. They got murals with some of Mexico's heroes (lower tier) and most of the City's Attractions, hope you can recognize some from past posts!!

Art Imitates Life

This is an sculpture made to the image of the main peaks of the Cerro de la Silla (Saddle Hill) which is on the background.

This is the roof inside a hotel painted by Enrique Canales, one of Monterrey's most famous artists.

Este es el techo dentro de un hotel pintado por Enrique Canales, uno de los artistas Regios más famosos.

Monterrey's Mayor Office

This is the Mayor's Office, located at the Macroplaza.

The monument is called Homage to the Sun. It was made by Mexican artist Rufino Tamayo, who recently was in the news because someone found a 1,ooo,ooo US dollar painting made by him in a New York City Trash.

Esta es la Alcaldía de Monterrey en la Macroplaza.

El monumento se llama Homenaje al Sol. Fue hecho por el artista Mexicano Rufino Tamayo, quien estuvo recientemente en las noticias porque encontraron una pintura suya, valuada en 1,000,000 de dólares, en un basurero de Nueva York.

A Saint in Town

This is a replica of Michelangelo's David put at the top of a funtain.

Monterrey is surrounded by smaller cities that in the last 30 years have become a big Metroplex. Some of those cities are named after saints. This statue is located in San Pedro (Saint Peter).

Other cities are San Nicolas (Saint Nicholas), Santa Catarina (Saint Catherine) and Guadalupe (Named after the Virgin of Guadalupe).

Esta es una réplica del David de Miguel Angel, sobre una fuente.

Monterrey está rodeada por ciudades más pequeñas que en los últimos 30 años han formado una gran Metrópoli. Algunas de estas ciudades fueron nombradas en honor a santos. Esta estatua está en San Pedro.

Las otras ciudades son San Nicolás, Santa Catarina y Guadalupe (en honor a la Virgen de Guadalupe).

A Rose is a Rose is a...

This is part of an exhibition compiled of artwork made by Mexican Women or Women who live most of their lives in Mexico.

And is fully made of...... you guessed right!! Roses!!! 

Pretty nice, and long as it repeats a couple of times.

Esto es parte de una exhibición de obras hechas por Mujeres Mexicanas o Mujeres que vivieron la mayor parte de su vida en México.

Y está hecha completamente de...... adivinaste!! Rosas!!!

Muy interensante, y extensa ya que se repita algunas veces.

 

No Horsing Around

This sculpture is from Colombian artist Fernando Botero. It is placed at the Macroplaza, right in front of the  State Government Offices.

Botero is known for his fat subjects, although he states that he doesn't make them fat but exaggerates their muscles to make them more appealing to the viewer.  Is it really? What do you think? 

Esta escultura es del artista colombiano Fernando Botero. Está en la Macroplaza, justo frente al Palacio de Gobierno del Estado.

Botero es conocido por sus sujetos gordos, aunque el dice que no los hace gordos sino que exagera su musculatura para hacerlos más agradables al espectador. ¿Será? ¿Qué opinas?

Get Inside

This is part of Fundidora Park. 

As I told you before, this used to be a Steel Foundry that closed in the 80s and was converted into a Park for the City.

You can see this sculture, which is supposed to be “doors” or a tunnel inside the park. Also on the right side you can see the hotel (Holiday Inn) located inside the park, just by the racing track.

Esto es parte del Parque Fundidora. 

Como les mencioné antes, esto era una Fundidora de Acero que cerró en los 80s y fue convertida en un parque para la Ciudad.

Pueden ver esta escultura, que se supone que son puertas o un túnel dentro del parque. También del lado derecho pueden ver el hotel (Holiday Inn) que está dentro del parque, justo a un lado de la pista de carreras.

Botero's Abu Ghraib

Haven't had the chance to post this before. Almost a month ago Botero's Abu Ghraib exhibition left the City to return to Berkeley, California. Fernando Botero is a master Colombian painter, known for painting, or sculpting, his subjects as fat people/animals.

It's certainly a crude and chilling expo because of the theme: the tortures at Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison. That's why I rather take a picture of the title instead of any painting.

Botero's main goal with this exhibition was to do for Abu Ghraib what Picasso did for Guernica.

No había tenido la oportunidad de publicar esto antes. Hace casi un mes, la exhibición Abu Ghraib de Botero dejó la Ciudad para regresar a Berkeley, California. Fernando Botero es un maestro pintor y escultor colombiano, que es conocido por sus sujetos “gordos”.

Realmente es una exposición con un tema crudo y escalofriante: las torturas en la prisión Iraquí de Abu Ghraib. Por eso preferí tomarle una foto al título en lugar de alguna de las pinturas.

El principal objetivo de Botero con esta exhibición era hacer para Abu Ghraib lo que Picasso hizo por Guernica.

Easter/Spring Parade and Expo - Part 6

A couple of Sundays ago there was an Easter/Spring Parade.

It was also a chance to make Easter Eggs designs & decorations and put them on a park so the people going to the parade could check them out.

I've posted since last week some of those and today is the last of the series.

This egg is asking for Peace and Love. Is it too much to ask?


Hace 2 domingos hubo un desfile de Pascua/Primavera.

Aprovecharon para exponer diseños y decoraciones de Huevos de Pascua y ponerlos en un parque para que la gente que iba al desfile los pudiera ver.

Publiqué algunos la semana pasada y hoy es el último de la serie.

En este huevo piden por Amor y Paz. ¿Es mucho pedir?
