Oil Holiday

Today is a holiday in Mexico, the Oil Expropiation was today 70 years ago.

This mural is on another room from the house I wrote about last week. On the left side there is the image of President Cardenas, oil workers and a map of Mexico filled with oil. The rest of the mural is how the artist expressed the choices that poor farmers face between Mexico or migrating to look for the “American Dream”.

On that date the then President (Lazaro Cardenas) took all the consessions and plants from the foreign companies, since they didn''t accept the labor unions, arguing they were losing money. After an investigation the Government found they were more profitable here that in their countries. When they didn't reach an agreement,  they were ousted from the country and the Government formed its own Oil Company that still manages all of Mexico's Oil (Pemex).

Is there anything special that you do on a 'Oil Holiday'?

You know, like a BBQ on Australia Day, turkeys on Thanksgiving, or firecrackers at New Years...

Not really, we get the day off work and school.

Up until a few years ago, in the cities that had Oil processing plants, there were paradesby the workers. Those were more political than festive.

Now people takes the day off to go on a picnik or short vacation.

Saludos.
