Old Downtown - Old River Bar

This is the entrance to Bar Rio Antiguo located at Barrio Antiguo, just at downtown.

This is a little word play: Barrio means Neighborhood; Bar Rio means River Bar. Free publicity!

Enjoy the weekend!

¡Publicidad gratis!

You Are Here

Just look at the arrow marking the spot.

While the objective it's not exactly to let people know how to get to their destination, this bank points at their ATMs so at least they can have some cash, just in case.

Adopt a Rubber Ducky!!!

Here is another rubber duck sighting in the City!! (See yerterday's) Now at the door of a supermarket.

A rubber duckies race is being organized for charity (here's the link in Spanish) (and a second link if you'd like to donate). People can "adopt" a rubber ducky for about 5 US Dollar and on a few weeks thousands will be released at Paseo Santa Lucía.

Each ducky has a number based on which sponsors will award some prizes, depending who are the first to arrive to the other end of the river.

This was taken at a car dealership. He's practically saying "Drive my Car" :)

Any idea what is the rubber duck doing here??

Laying the Grounds

A big construction project just begun. These are about 3/4 of the trucks that are in site to start preparing the foundations of the building.

I'll post about this every few months to track the progress of the construction.

Who wants it More ??

Today, Moscow will host the UEFA Champions League Final.

This year the champion will be from England,  who's your favorite?? Manchester United or Chelsea??

This is the world's biggest football (soccer) clubs championship and in this photo you can see the trophy which, at least in Latin America, is nicknamed “The Big Eared” because of its large handles.

The trophy was on tour here about a month ago, nearly 7,000 fans showed to have a picture with it.

How's my Driving?

For those of you wondering how driving is in Monterrey, here is this photo taken at night.

You can notice from the lights that is a little bit bumpy, which makes it really difficult to drive when its raining, other than that it's like evertwhere else.

Local Food Restaurant

This is the most famous local food restaurant in Monterrey.

The traditional local dish is Cabrito (baby goat) and at this restaurant they call themselves the King of Cabrito (Rey del Cabrito). You even can see the baby goats thru the crown in the restaurant's logo.

Happy Meal

This is the entrance to.... yeah you guess it right:  the drive thru of a fast food restaurant.

Due the short time to eat, and because is easier and faster than cooking at home, this has been a huge business in the recent past.

This is from Carl's Jr. , but can pretty much find any of the big franchises here: Mcdonald's, Burger King, Starbucks, among many others.

City Border

This is an office building located on the edge of Monterrey.

You can see the sign where Monterrey starts. Basically the picture was taken a few meters into San Pedro, which is the City where the other buildings are located that show you yesterday.

Tallest Buildings

These are 2 of the tallest buildings in Monterrey... and a not so big hydrant between them, or is it ?  :)

Actually they are located in San Pedro, which is the part of the Metroplex that host most the central offices of some of the big companies hosted in the City.

Only the top part of the building on the left host departments, the rest, on both buildings, are offices.

Monterrey's Mayor Office

This is the Mayor's Office, located at the Macroplaza.

The monument is called Homage to the Sun. It was made by Mexican artist Rufino Tamayo, who recently was in the news because someone found a 1,ooo,ooo US dollar painting made by him in a New York City Trash.

Close up to La Huasteca

This is La Huasteca Canyon, although the river is formed only with heavy rains. You can check it our from the distance.

Its part of the Cumbres National Park area.

A inside park has been developed around it for people to spend the weekends walking, climbing... even music concerts are performed here due the great acoustic form with the mountain.

Click the picture to see it in full size, and note the size of the cars at the bottom.

The Theater of the City

This is related to yesterday's post, which showed the City Theater. Now is the City as a Theater.

Started wondering how many things can be  happening at the same time in a city. Some dramas, some comedies.

Maybe the smoke in the lower middle of the photo is a fire or maybe just a big cooking session.

A Saint in Town

This is a replica of Michelangelo's David put at the top of a funtain.

Monterrey is surrounded by smaller cities that in the last 30 years have become a big Metroplex. Some of those cities are named after saints. This statue is located in San Pedro (Saint Peter).

Other cities are San Nicolas (Saint Nicholas), Santa Catarina (Saint Catherine) and Guadalupe (Named after the Virgin of Guadalupe).

Birds!!

This is a crafts store at downtown.

Two special things about the picture: first, there were all these doves standing just watching people pass by; second, the ad at the top.

That ad is for a place for children birthday parties. They have 2 chimps which, I suppose, are available for pictures and maybe a show.

This is 5 de Mayo Street just behind the State Government Palace at the Macroplaza.

Cinco de Mayo is the celebration known mainly in the USA, for completely different reasons than here.

Do you know why May 5th is celebrated in Mexico?

In a nutshell, Mexico owed a lot of money to France, England and Spain in the 1860s, so these countries decided to invade Mexico to collect.

When the troops arrived, a diplomatic agreement was made with England and Spain, but France wanted to control the country so they reject the negotiations.

As the Frech Army was advancing to Mexico City it was intercepted and defeated in Puebla by a Mexican Army that was just formed and lacked of experience. This took place in May 5th, 1862 and is known as the Battle of Puebla.

Barrio Antiguo Series - 3 of 3

This is part of a series that I began posting a few days ago.

This was taken at the “Barrio Antiguo” (Old Downtown) zone. Note the narrow of the streets, where basically only one car can be parked to leave space for others to pass by.

Also note the old fashion street light, which is used as the image of a yerly festival that is organized here. There is one on the left side and other across the street, at the door right behing the truck.

Barrio Antiguo Series - 2 of 3

This is part of a series that I begun publishing yesterday.

This zone is called “Barrio Antiguo” (Old Downtown). The building here one of the bars located in the zone, its closed since they open only at night.

As I told you before, not many people lives here anymore since there are many bars like this, each a few meters from each other,  which makes very unsettling to try to sleep at night with a lot of people bar hopping.

Barrio Antiguo Series - 1 of 3

This was taken at a street in the “Barrio Antiguo” (Old Downtown) zone right in the heart of the City.

Note how the street was made with stones inside the asphalt (or maybe left like that since they built the street a while back, I'm not sure) to give it the old times look and feel.

Nowadays not many people live here, the zone is used mostly for business and commerce because of its location.

How many number can you count in here??

There's one for everyone!!

The photo was taken at one local supermarket.

¿¿Cuántos números puedes contar aquí??

¡¡Hay algo para todos!!
