Valle Oriente

This has nothing to do with pop group OV7 (former Grease Mexican ensemble), this is a landmark that  signals the start of one of the main business and entertainment areas in the Metroplex.

It's VO which stands for Valle Oriente (Valley West) and it's one of a few of these sculptures scattered thru the area.



Esto no tiene nada que ver con el grupo de pop OV7 (parte del ensamble anterior de Vaselina en México), este es un monumento que señala el inicio de una de las principales áreas de negocios y entretenimiento en la zona metropolitana.

Es VO que son las iniciales de Valle Oriente y es una de varias de estas esculturas por la zona.

From the Base Up

This is the pillar of the bridge showed previously here.

You can see the plaque with the year and the names of the politics in charge when it was finished. Also the steel cables are at the very top of it.


Este es la base del pilar del puente  atirantado (más fotos aquí).

Pueden ver la placa con el año en que fue terminado y los nombres de los políticos a cargo en esa fecha. También se alcanzan a ver los cables de acero en la parte más alta.

Steel Cables

This is the most distinctive brindge in the City.

Is supported by steel cables and unite the Cities of Monterrey and San Pedro.

Está soportado por cables de acero y une a las Ciudades de Monterrey y San Pedro.

Happy B-Day Monterrey!!! - City Foundation Series 1.1

Monterrey was founded 412 years ago on September 20th.

This is the place where Diego de Montemayor declared the City founded. This is a sculpture dedicated to him right at the spot where everything happened, even on one side of the base says “Aqui” which means Here.

The mural behind him has a brief history of the City, from the moment the founders arrived to the big buildings and industries built some 400 years later. Click on the picture for a bigger view.


Monterrey fué fundada hace 412 años este 20 de Septiembre.

Este es el lugar donde don Diego de Montemayor declaró la Ciudad Fundada. Esta es una escultura dedicada a él, justo en el lugar donde todo sucedió; incluso en la base de la escultura dice “Aquí”.

El mural detrás es una breve historia de la Ciudad, desde el momento en que llegaron los fundadores, hasta que los grandes edificios e industrias fueron construidas cerca de 400 años después. Pueden dar click a la foto para una vista más grande.

The flag pole is about 330 feet high (just above 100 meters) and the flag is 164 feet wide (50 m) and 94 feet high (29 m).

Where He's Pointing At??

This statue is to honor Miguel Hidalgo.

He's carring a banner of the Virgin of Guadalupe in his left hand.

Who was he? What did he do to deserve a statue? You'll know tomorrow.



Esta estatua es en honor a  Miguel Hidalgo.

Tiene en su mano izquierda una bandera con la imagen de la Virgen de Guadalupe.

¿Quién fué él? ¿Qué hizo para merecer una estatua? Mañana lo sabrán.

Heroes of the '47

This is the monument to the “Child Heroes” (Niños Héroes), celebrating Juan Escutia, Agustín Melgar, Fernando Montes de Oca, Vicente Suárez, Juan de la Barrera and Francisco Márquez.  They were between 13 and 19 years old at the time.

On September 13th 1847,  US forces were invading Mexico City and were about to take the Chapultepec Castle. The Mexican general ordered his army to retreat, but six cadets decided to stay and defend the Castle or die trying.

Since they were hugely outnumbered, 5 of them were killed  and the last one (Juan Escutia) decided to take the Mexican Flag waving at the top of the Castle, wrapped himself in it and jump from the top so the enemy could not have it.

On 1947, US President Harry Truman made a silent reverence before the Monument at Mexico City. When asked why he did it he said, “Brave men don't belong to any one country. I respect bravery wherever I see it.”. Here is the full article by Wikipedia. 






Este es el monumento a los Niños Héroes, en honor a Juan Escutia, Agustín Melgar, Fernando Montes de Oca, Vicente Suárez, Juan de la Barrera y Francisco Márquez. Tenían entre 13 y 19 años en ese momento.


El 13 de Septiembre de 1847, fuerzas de EEUU invadiendo la Ciudad de México atacaron el Castillo de Chapultepec. El General Mexicano ordenó la retirada, pero seis cadetes decidieron quedarse y defender el Castillo o morir en el intento. 


Como eran bastante superados en número, 5 de ellos fueron asesinados y el último decidió tomar la bandera que ondeaba en la parte alta del Castillo, se envolvió en ella y saltó de lo más alto para que el enemigo no pudiera tenerla. 


En 1947, el Presidente de EEUU Harry Truman guardo silencio en señal de respeto frente al Monumento en la Ciudad de México. Cuando le preguntaron porqué lo había hecho, respondió: “Los hombres valientes no pertenecen a ningún país. Yo respeto la valentía donde quiera que la vea”. Pueden ver más de esta historia aquí.

A Hunter with His Dog

These are a few sculptures located in the development from yesterday.

They adorned the streets with this child despicting sculptures, which makes it really nice to look at while going to your destination.

This one is from a kid hunting with his slingshot. There's also a little cat right below the tree.



Estas son algunas esculturas que están en el desarrollo de ayer.

Adornaron las calles con estas esculturas de niños, que hace más placentero el camino.

Esta es de un niño cazando con su hulera. También hay un gato bajo el árbol.

The Other Face

Yesterday I introduced you to this sculpture, which is located in the Autonomous University of Nuevo Leon's (UANL) main campus.

The real reason to do so was that I wanted to show you today's photo. It the same sculpture, only from a different angle so you can see other of the faces... and also its new look by being painted in yellow, which I think makes it stand out even more.



Ayer les presenté esta escultura, que está ubicada en el campus principal de la Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León (UANL).

La verdadera razón de ponerla era porque quería mostrarles la foto del día de hoy. Es la misma escultura, sólo que desde un ángulo diferente para que pudieran ver otra de sus caras... y también su nueva imagen al estar pintada de amarillo, que creo hace que sobresalga aún más.

Tech Support

This is a sculpture in the Autonomous University of Nuevo Leon's (UANL) main campus. Is located right beside the Information Technology school and pretty close this building that I posted a few weeks ago.

It has 4 sides each featuring the same face, in this photo you are looking at two of them. If you look it from the top its like an plus sign. I'm not sure what it represents, communication maybe? what do you think?


Esta es una escultura en el campus principal de la Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León (UANL). Está justo a un lado de la facultad de Informática y muy cerca de este otro edificio que publiqué hace algunas semanas.

Tiene 4 lados cada uno con la misma cara, en esta foto pueden ver 2 de ellos. Si la ven desde arriba es como un signo de suma. No estoy seguro que representa, ¿talvez comunicación? ¿Qué opinan?

Just a Dove

What's this giant dove looking at??

Its looking to the entrance of the Contemporary Art Museum (known as MARCO). It's supposed to be a stylish dove standing by the water while checking the people coming in and out of the museum.

Behind you can see some other landmarks of the Macroplaza such as the orange Tower of Commerce, popularly known as the “Laser Ray”, because at night it sends a green laser light  around the City.



¿Qué está viendo esta paloma gigante?

Ve directamente a la entrada del Museo de Arte Contemporáneo (conocido como MARCO). Se supone que es una paloma estilizada parada al lado del agua mientras observa a la gente que entra y sale del museo.

Detrás de ella pueden ver otros edificios característicos de la Macroplaza como el Faro del Comercio (en naranja) conocida comúnmente como el “Rayo Láser”, porque en las noches manda un láser verde alrededor de la Ciudad.

Watching Over

Here's a statue of a saint that is located on top of Cerro del Obispado (Bishop's Hill).

It's right on the edge of a small square looking into the City and to the Cerro de la Silla (Saddle Hill) that appears on the center of the photo.



Esta es la estatua de un santo que está en la cima del Cerro del Obispado.

Está puesta en la orilla de una pequeña plaza desde donde observa la Ciudad y el Cerro de la Silla que aparece en el centro de la foto.

Philosophy Major

The UANL (University of Nuevo Leon) is a public college that also happens to be the biggest in the State, with around 115,000 active students in all.

Each major has its own school inside the UANL's big campus, each one with its own sub-identity. Every student or alumni is known as a Tiger, but the sub-identities are as varied as the majors offered.

Here is the mascot from the School of Philosophy, the unicorn.

In future posts I'll show you some others mascots.

La Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León  (UANL) es una universidad pública que también es la más grande del Estado, con alrededor de 115,000 estudiantes en total.

Cada carrera tiene su propia escuela dentro del gran campus de la UANL, y cada una con su propia sub-identidad. Cada estudiante o ex-estudiante es conocido como un Tigre, pero las sub-identidades son tan variadas como la oferta de carreras.

Esta es la mascota de la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras, el unicornio.

En futuras entradas les iré poniendo algunos otros.

Time to Spare?

A little traffic in one of the main avenues of Monterrey (the light had just changed to green).

The curse of every city...

You can see at the top one of the Metro lines and in front, the Arch  in the middle of the street, which is a history for another day.

Un poco de tráfico en una de las avenidas principales de Monterrey (acababa de cambiar a verde el semáforo).

La maldición de toda ciudad... 

Pueden ver arriba una de las líneas del Metro y enfrente, el Arco enmedio de la calle, aunque esa es una historia para otro día.

Looking at the Mountains

This is a statue at one of the main avenues in Monterrey.

It was pretty well placed, since it has a great view of the mountains.


Esta es una estatua en una de las principales avenidas de Monterrey.

Está muy bien posicionada, ya que le dejaron una gran vista a las montañas.
