Theme Day: Big

Today's Theme Day is Big.

This is the biggest Flag (and flag pole) in all Mexico,  measuring 50 meters long and 29 meters high (164 x 95 feet) and weights 230 kilos (507 pounds).

The flag pole is 100 meters high, which is around 328 feet; you can even look at its shadow from the satellite images at Google Maps. Is located at the top of a small mountain, which makes it visible from a large part of the City.

This is supposely one of the biggest in the World. If someone knows of a bigger Flag or Flag Pole somewhere, please let me know in the comments.

El Tema del Día es Grande.

Esta es la Bandera (y el Asta) más grande de México, mide 50 metros de ancho por 29 de alto y pesa 230 kilos.

El Asta mide 100 metros de altura, incluso se puede ver la sombra en las imágenes de satélite de Google Maps. Aparte está sobre un cerro que hace que se vea desde casi toda la Ciudad.

Esta es, supuestamente, una de las banderas más grandes del Mundo. Si alguien conoce  una Bandera o un Asta más grande en alguna parte, por favor avíseme en los comentarios.

Pueden ver que tan Grandes son las cosas alrededor del Mundo en las ligas que vienen abajo hacia todos los participantes en el Tema.

A New Beginning

Just like the sunrises after the night, here we will begin to post after a long layoff, hopefully for a long time. Maybe a couple of times a week at the start and then back to an almost daily schedule. Thanks for staying or visiting for the firt time.

...and what better excuse to post a photo taken before sunrise?? This is the Cerro de la Silla, the emblematic mountain in the City, an the State (Nuevo Leon) for that matter.


Tal y como el sol sale después de la noche, aquí empezaremos a publicar después de un largo descanso, esperemos que por mucho tiempo. Tal vez un par de veces a la semana al principio y más adelante volver a publicar casi a diario. Gracias por seguir aquí o por visitar por primera vez.

...¿¿y qué mejor excusa para poner una foto tomada al amanecer?? Este es el Cerro de la Silla, el emblema de la Ciudad y, prácticamente,  del Estado (Nuevo León).

Distinctions

This is a (kind of  dreamy) photo of the most distinctive part of Cerro de la Silla (Saddle Hill), which is the most distinctive natural landmark of Monterrey and the State (Nuevo Leon).

Esta foto  es de la parte más famosa (como  en sueños) del Cerro de la Silla, que a su vez es el símbolo de Monterrey y del Estado (Nuevo León).

The First Reported View?? - City Foundation Series 1.3

Maybe this was the first view by the Spanish of the Cerro de la Silla.

This was taken very close from the foundation spot highlighted the last few days.

Of course, only the mountain was there at that time, even the palms are not native from here.


Talvez esta fué la primera vista que tuvieron los españoles del Cerro de la Silla.

Esta foto fué tomada muy cerca del lugar de la fundación que apareció en los últimos días.

Por supuesto, sólo el cerro estaba ahí en ese tiempo, ni siquiera las palmas son nativas de aquí.

The flag pole is about 330 feet high (just above 100 meters) and the flag is 164 feet wide (50 m) and 94 feet high (29 m).

Where He's Pointing At??

This statue is to honor Miguel Hidalgo.

He's carring a banner of the Virgin of Guadalupe in his left hand.

Who was he? What did he do to deserve a statue? You'll know tomorrow.



Esta estatua es en honor a  Miguel Hidalgo.

Tiene en su mano izquierda una bandera con la imagen de la Virgen de Guadalupe.

¿Quién fué él? ¿Qué hizo para merecer una estatua? Mañana lo sabrán.

A Hunter with His Dog

These are a few sculptures located in the development from yesterday.

They adorned the streets with this child despicting sculptures, which makes it really nice to look at while going to your destination.

This one is from a kid hunting with his slingshot. There's also a little cat right below the tree.



Estas son algunas esculturas que están en el desarrollo de ayer.

Adornaron las calles con estas esculturas de niños, que hace más placentero el camino.

Esta es de un niño cazando con su hulera. También hay un gato bajo el árbol.

I've Got the Power

This is from a new development in the outskirts of the City.

You can see the huge electrical towers installed, maybe before they decided to approve a residential zone near here.



Este es de un nuevo desarrollo en las afueras de la Ciudad.

Pueden ver la enorme torre eléctrica en su lugar, posiblemente desde antes de que aprobaran el desarrollo residencial aquí.

Making some Waves - Rubber Ducky Race - Series 1.4

This is a follow-up from the 2008 Rubber Ducky Race, you can check here the previous posts.

Since this man-made river has no current, there had to make something to move the duckies to the finish line.

This is how the waves were made. A guy in a Jet Ski passed over and over to create the necessary push for the  duckies to arrive to their destination... it took around 45 minutes, since there were so many of them and they were floating in the widest part of the river.

In the background you can see the Mitras Hill (Cerro de las Mitras) which is one of the main mountains surrounding the City.

Esta es la continuación de la Carrera del Patito de Hule 2008, pueden ver los previos aquí.

Al ser este un río artificial no tiene corriente, por lo que se tenía que hacer algo para hacer llegar a los patitos a la meta.

Así fue como se hicieron las olas. Una persona en una Moto Acuática pasó una y otra vez para crear el impulso necesario para que los patitos llegaran a su destino... tardaron casi 45 minutos, al ser tantos patitos y estar en la parte más ancha del río.

Al fondo de la foto pueden ver el Cerro de las Mitras que es una de las principales montañas que rodean la Ciudad.

Mañana un poco más sobre esto...

Watching Over

Here's a statue of a saint that is located on top of Cerro del Obispado (Bishop's Hill).

It's right on the edge of a small square looking into the City and to the Cerro de la Silla (Saddle Hill) that appears on the center of the photo.



Esta es la estatua de un santo que está en la cima del Cerro del Obispado.

Está puesta en la orilla de una pequeña plaza desde donde observa la Ciudad y el Cerro de la Silla que aparece en el centro de la foto.

Time to Spare?

A little traffic in one of the main avenues of Monterrey (the light had just changed to green).

The curse of every city...

You can see at the top one of the Metro lines and in front, the Arch  in the middle of the street, which is a history for another day.

Un poco de tráfico en una de las avenidas principales de Monterrey (acababa de cambiar a verde el semáforo).

La maldición de toda ciudad... 

Pueden ver arriba una de las líneas del Metro y enfrente, el Arco enmedio de la calle, aunque esa es una historia para otro día.

Looking at the Mountains

This is a statue at one of the main avenues in Monterrey.

It was pretty well placed, since it has a great view of the mountains.


Esta es una estatua en una de las principales avenidas de Monterrey.

Está muy bien posicionada, ya que le dejaron una gran vista a las montañas.

The Top of the Hill

This is a department building located at the top of a hill. 

You can see other buildings raising at the hill at the back of the picture, which seems to be the trend nowadays: grow upwards.


Este es un edificio de departamentos en la cima de un cerro.

Pueden ver otros edificios en el cerro al fondo de la foto, que parece ser la nueva tendencia: crecer hacia arriba.

Outdoor expo

This is part of the 2501 Immigrants Expo that was in exhibit last year as part of the Forum Monterrey 2007.

The artist created 2501 different sculptures to symbolize all the people that need to leave their homes in search of a better life.



Esta es parte de la exposición 2501 Migrantes que fue parte del Forum Monterrey 2007.

El artista creó 2501 esculturas diferentes para representar toda la gente que necesita dejar sus hogares en busca de un mejor tipo de vida.

Art Imitates Life

This is an sculpture made to the image of the main peaks of the Cerro de la Silla (Saddle Hill) which is on the background.

Esta es una escultura de los picos más conocidos del Cerro de la Silla, que está al fondo.

Laying the Grounds

A big construction project just begun. These are about 3/4 of the trucks that are in site to start preparing the foundations of the building.

I'll post about this every few months to track the progress of the construction.

Un gran proyecto de construcción acaba de comenzar. Estos son como 3/4 partes de los camiones que están trabajando en el terreno del edificio.

Seguiré actualizando sobre este proyecto cada 3-4 meses para ir viendo su avance.

Close up to La Huasteca

This is La Huasteca Canyon, although the river is formed only with heavy rains. You can check it our from the distance.

Its part of the Cumbres National Park area.

A inside park has been developed around it for people to spend the weekends walking, climbing... even music concerts are performed here due the great acoustic form with the mountain.

Este es el Cañón de la Huasteca, aunque el río se forma sólo con lluvias fuertes. Pueden también verlo de lejos.

Es parte del Parque Nacional Cumbres.

Un parque se ha desarrollado alrededor de la montaña para pasar los fines de semana caminando, escalando... incluso conciertos musicales son desarrollados aquí por la gran acústica que se forma con la montaña.
